Radio personality Michelle Loo recently dismissed the notion that Tony Leung Chiu Wai should retire for awards ceremony to give way for younger actors to win.
As reported on Mingpao, the DJ, who is also an actress and producer, said that she disagrees with Wong Jing’s recent social media post about Tony, where the filmmaker questioned the actor’s latest Best Actor win at the Hong Kong Film Awards, his sixth overall.
Said Michelle, while it is true that Tony has won six times, it has been 19 years since he was last awarded for his performance, with the last one being 2004’s “2046”. He also lost six times out of the 12 nominations he received including in 2014, when his performance in “The Grandmaster” was bested by Nick Cheung’s “Unbeatable”.
“Tony did not stop anybody from winning the award, nor did he stop the world from turning. He rarely makes Hong Kong films in recent years, and it might even take a longer time to see him do another. Everybody should support this great actor more,” she said.
As for Carina Lau defending her husband’s win at the HKFA, Michelle said that it was understandable for a wife to do so.
“In the eyes of a wife, her husband will always be the best in the world,” she said.
