Fred Cheng recently revealed that the chance to dictate his direction in music is one of the reasons why he decided to sign with Voice Entertainment (now TVB Music Group) again, after ending their contract in 2020.

In an interview with Mingpao, the singer, who sat down for an interview recently, admitted that when he was with the company for eight years prior to his departure, he fell into a low tide and lost all confidence.

“I felt like my singing went downhill and I had a wakeup call. I didn’t want to become a soulless singer, so I stopped after my contract expired,” he said.

However, while he was working on his own, Fred said that the company had a reorganisation, with the operation and culture now different from the past.

“The company changed to a new team and I can now make decisions on many things. I also get to work with composer Carl Wong. I like his work on [Nicholas Tse’s] “VIVA” very much. I am so happy that I have found my soul again,” he added.

Fred thanked Carl for designing a new style of music for him instead of the same love songs, enabling him to show his personality in his songs.

He admitted that he used to not believe in his own capability because he didn’t want to make mistakes, but after finishing the new song, he felt that he should be braver.
