Zhang Yimou has surpassed his previous box office record with his latest film, “Full River Red”.
The Chinese filmmaker’s new movie, which was released on Lunar New Year, has surpassed RMB 1.2 billion (approx. USD 177 million), becoming his highest-grossing film to-date.
The previous record was held by “Cliff Walkers”, which made RMB 1.19 billion when it came out in 2021.
The new movie stars Shen Teng as Zhang Da, a lowly soldier as he investigates the murder of an envoy alongside a ruthless deputy commander (Jackson Yee). The movie co-stars Zhang Yi, Lei Jiayin, and Yue Yunpeng.
“Full River Red” is currently the second highest grossing Lunar New Year movie of the year, bested only by the Wu Jing-starrer, “The Wandering Earth 2”.
