Even before competing in the Mrs World international beauty pageant, Olivia Nicholas is already breaking the Malaysian record for her national costume.
On 7 December, the beauty queen shared the good news on social media, writing, “I am wearing my national costume that was recorded in the Malaysian Book of Records for the most number of 5 cent coins on a national costume called Destar Siga. I carry this majestic national costume with so much pride and joy. I can’t wait to showcase it live in Las Vegas, Nevada.”
“Thank you @sharan_adyran for this beautifully curated national costume. I know it took sheer blood, sweat, tears and not forgetting late nights.”
According to Bernama, the costume is fashioned by Sarawakian designer, Saran Anak Lagong, and the Destar Siga, which is the motif used, is the Kadazan Dusun indigenous form of weaved fabric used as a headdress during traditional ceremonies.
There are 10,000 five-sen coins used in the costume, a fact that enabled the costume to make it into the Malaysian Book of Records.
The married lawyer will be representing the country at this year’s pageant on 17 December.
