Charlene Choi recently revealed that there is no truth at all to ongoing rumours that she comes from a wealthy family.

As reported on Epoch Times, the singer recently sat down for an interview on a mainland entertainment show, saying that she often sees articles about how her father is allegedly a rich CEO of an entertainment company and that her music duo Twins became popular because of this.

“I don’t know where this news came from,” she said about the rumour.

Charlene stressed that her family was not wealthy but that her parents would always give her the best things in life, without her knowing about it until later in life.

Charlene recalled that when she was a child, she took ballet classes and that every Saturday after class, her mother would take her to a restaurant and always lets her choose a meal but never chose one for herself.

The singer said that when she was older and thought about it, she realised that the whole family seldom went out to eat, and she had no idea about it.

In another instance, Charlene said that she made an appointment with her classmates to get her hair permed, and was upset when her father couldn’t give her the money. In the end, her father did give her the money to spend, but it wasn’t until she was older that she found out her father pawned his own gold bracelet to do so.

“I really was a disobedient child at the time,” she said.

Charlene said that she has a great relationship with her parents, and that it has now made her a very thrifty person.

“Some people described me as stingy. But I just spend what I should spend on. If there are two similar things, one is cheaper and the other is expensive, why buy the expensive one?” she said.
