Taiwanese TV personality Dee Hsu has recently found herself being boycotted and blasted by mainland fans, who accused her of being a Taiwan independence supporter.
The reason being? She called Taiwanese badminton player Tai Tzu Ying who competed in the Olympics representing Chinese Taipei as a “national athlete”.
The 43 year-old, who has been following the Tokyo Olympics since it started, recently made a post about the quarter-final match between Tai Tzu-ying and Thailand’s Intanon Ratchanok on 30 July, and expressed her awe with the former.
She later made a comment about inviting all the “national athletes” to dine at her home, provoking attacks from mainland netizens who claimed that Dee was indirectly expressing support for Taiwan independence.
In addition, they were also unhappy that Dee expressed that she is still proud of Tai after the latter was defeated by China’s Chen Yufei.
After angering the mainland fans, Dee found herself losing four endorsement deals with brands including lifestyle brand Pinkoi and beverage brand JD, while her teen daughter Elly was also fired as the face of fashion label Jorya.
In an interview with Taiwanese media, Dee’s mother stated that the actress has been very upset over the said situation.
“Dee thinks that every athlete is good and that all sports are great. I hope that brands and netizens would not boycott her,” she said.
