After years of battling cancer, it was revealed that former Hong Kong singer Sarena Li has passed away.
The news was shared by friend Steven Ma, who posted the sad news on Sarena’s Facebook that read, “In respect of Sarena Li Mingwei’s wishes, I will announce here on behalf of her family that on 4 May 2021 at 5:10 in the afternoon, [Sarena] has returned to the embrace of Heavenly Father. Thank you all for your continuous care, support and love for her! Thank you! Bless you all! Amen!”
Steven then posted a message on his own social media, writing, “No more pain. Don’t be afraid. Wait for me in heaven. Let’s wait for that day.”
Sarena was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2012 while she was studying in Canada. After undergoing 38 electrotherapy and four chemotherapy treatments in half a year, the singer’s body suffered many side effects including hearing loss in one ear, muscle atrophy, and oral ulceration.
Despite surviving the condition the first time, in 2016, the cancer recurred and spread to her lungs, liver, kidney and bones. Due to the enlargement of the tumour, Sarena also experienced facial paralysis that also affected her right eye.
The last time Sarena updated her social media was on 20 April, stating that she had to be hospitalised again due to breathing difficulties.
She was 31.
