Sylvia Chang has recently expressed her thoughts about the idea of suppression of creative freedom in Hong Kong, saying that there are a lot of new filmmakers who have come out with new ideas.

As reported on Mingpao, the actress and producer, who appeared at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival recently, was asked about her opinion on Johnnie To’s previous interview with the BBC, in which he stated that he has lost his soul when it comes to filmmaking, “just like Hong Kong.”

Stressing that she didn’t see the interview, Sylvia said that she believes that Hong Kong is going through a new beginning and that she is confident in its rise with so many new filmmakers from the new generation coming out.

“In the current environment, they naturally have their own stories they want to tell. They are all free to film what they want to film. I feel that the younger generation should be allowed to make the movies they want to make,” she said.

It is noted that Johnnie previously shared in a BBC interview that he has discarded a lot of ideas in recent years due to his creative freedom being suffocated.

“Freedom of speech, simply speaking, it is one of human rights. I feel that it is different from my original life. There has been a big difference in Hong Kong over the past few decades,” he said, referring to the current HKSAR government.

Meanwhile, the actress, who was at the red carpet to attend the screening of her movie “Daughter’s Daughter”, which has been chosen as the closing film for the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, stated that she is happy that the movie is finally being released.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many investors withdrew and thought it would fail, but it was finally completed. In the end, the whole team was the same. We all want to make it happen,” she said.
