The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) recently announced that it is offering two different programmes this month.
“This Is It: Tribute to Michael Jackson”, a tribute by the klpac Symphonic Band will be held from 15 to 17 March 2024 at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac).
In the upcoming concert conducted by Cheryl Mah, Malaysians will have the chance to relive these very hits such as “Thriller”, “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Smooth Criminal” and many more all-time favourites.
It is then followed by “Spice, Magic and Mystique” from 21 to 24 March 2024 – a more tranquil and calming experience that brings you on a cultural journey through Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. From Northern Sumatra to the Cordillera Mountain Range, the Eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia to hilly Chiang Mai, the Young KL Singers enchants you with a selection of choral songs on Southeast Asian folklore and folktale under the direction of Mak Chi Hoe and Ian Chow with choreography by Zhafir Muzani.
Audiences are invited to take a seat on mats, forming a cozy circle around the performers to bear witness to this mystical performance and to be part of the magic. As they sing songs that have been passed down from one generation to another like “Chua-ay” and “Cikala Le Pong Pong”, you will get a glimpse of the Igorot tribe from the Philippines pounding rice and working the fields and the Pakpak people of Northern Sumatra.
Both concerts are licensed by MACP.
klpac is offering a special Backstage Bites Tour + Concert Pass package for 23 March, Saturday, made possible by Yayasan Sime Darby. Embark on klpac’s guided tour experience where you can explore Malaysia’s only fully-integrated arts centre housed in a 122-year-old heritage building and access areas normally off limits to the public.
After the tour, participants may join the rest of the audiences for an engaging pre-show talk, also on 23 March only, by the creative tour de force behind “Spice, Magic & Mystique” who will be sharing insights on the music and choreography from the show that draws on rich Southeast Asian heritage.
Apart from this, Dancebox, co-organised by MyDance Alliance and The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat returns on 9 March. Aimed at showcasing a diverse range of dance works by emerging and established choreographers, this mixed-bill performance will feature choreography by Fione Chia, Vicky Yap, Zainadance Zidane & Sera Nina Sumbin, Fedrick Mujang & Nur Yasmin Zulaikha, Raziman Sarbini, Aramy Rasyid & Ethel Deidre, and Mohammad Adib.
