South Korean girl group NewJeans has broken the world record by becoming the fastest K-pop group to achieve a billion streams in a short time.
The news was announced by Guinness World Records on 8 May, stating that the group of five achieved the feat on Spotify in just 219 days, faster than any other K-pop acts, be it male, female or solo.
The original record was held by BLACKPINK’s Lisa, which reached a billion in 411 days, before BTS’ Jungkook broke it back in March in just 409 days. The two still currently hold the records for solo acts.
This is considered a great achievement for a new group which only has six songs available on Spotify, including the two songs from their single album “OMG”.
The group’s latest single is “Zero”, which was released on 3 April 2023 and currently has over 18 million streams.
