The box office hit “The First Slam Dunk” has been nominated at the Japan Academy Film Prize, also known as the Japan Academy Awards.

The movie, which was released late last year, has been nominated in the Animation of the Year category, and will be facing other competitors that include “Suzume no Tojimari” and “INU-OH”.

The other two nominees are “Once Piece Film: Red” and “Lonely Castle in the Mirror”.

Last year, “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time” won in the said category.

“The First Slam Dunk” is written and directed by its original mangaka Takehiko Inoue, and is based on his hit ’90s manga, “Slam Dunk”, which revolves around the hooligan-turned-basketball player Hanamichi Sakuragi. It has grossed USD 50.7 million at the box office in Japan as of 4 January 2023.
