The upcoming sequel to Wu Jing’s 2019 hit movie, “The Wandering Earth” will be released in January next year.

The sequel, which gets a new addition in Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, announced that the film will be in theatres on the first day of Lunar New Year on 22 January 2023.

During the press conference announcing the release date, Andy, who spoke about joining the movie, revealed the challenges of filming while wearing a 35kg space suit and a 50kg diving suit.

“It was the hardest to turn around and making sure not to hurt your back. It is also very itchy, but there was no way to scratch,” he said.

The original movie, adapted from the work of author Liu Cixin of “The Three-Body Problem” fame, is China’s fifth highest-grossing movie of all time and the fifth highest-grossing non-English film to date.

It follows a team of astronauts and rescue workers guiding the Earth away from an expanding Sun, while attempting to prevent a collision with Jupiter.
