There is no stopping Namewee now, it seems. After becoming a millionaire overnight by selling the NFT of his song, “Fragile”, the singer was recently awarded a Best Music Video – although it was for a different song.
The Malaysian singer-songwriter was recently honoured the said accolade at Taiwan’s 3rd Walk Bell John Awards (WBJA) for “Getaway to Kaohsiung”, a music video that he made after receiving the invitation by the Kaohsiung city government to create the theme song for the city’s tourism.
Expressing his elation on Instagram, Namewee wrote, “This is my first time attending the Walk Bell John Awards, and it is also the first time I have won an award in Taiwan. For me, the whole event is like a class reunion.”
“The difference between this awards ceremony and others is that the chances of the winners and presenters talking nonsense on stage are 10 times that of other large awards ceremonies,” he added lightheartedly.
Only in its third year after its inaugural event in 2019, the Walk Bell John Awards is held by Taiwanese YouTubers to encourage YouTube creators in Taiwan. Namewee explained that he had registered his YouTube account way back in 2006 when he was studying in a university in Taiwan.
