After the success of its Regency Era romance drama, “Bridgerton”, it was announced that Netflix and Shondaland are expanding the show’s universe.
According to the streaming giant, there will be an untitled spin-off of the franchise focusing on the origin story of Queen Charlotte (played by Golda Rosheuvel in the “Bridgerton” series), with script to be penned by producer Shonda Rhimes.
“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” said Netflix’s Original Content executive Bela Bajaria in a statement. “Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”
Aside from focusing on the rise of the young Queen Charlotte, the limited series will also include stories of young Bridgerton matriarch Violet, as well as Lady Danbury, the latter the guardian of the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset.
Season 2 of “Bridgerton”, on the other hand, is currently filming and will be based on Julia Quinn’s “The Viscount Who Loved Me”.
